While I make sure that every one of my wedding clients receives beautiful images, there are certain things you can do to make sure that your wedding photographs represent you best. One of the most important of these is to hire a makeup artist who can apply your makeup on the day of the wedding and ensure that you look your best on camera. Makeup for photographs isn’t the same as your general makeup routine and an experienced makeup professional knows what works best for still images. If you would still like to do your own makeup or have a friend do it for you on your wedding day, there are some things you should take into consideration. The following are 10 tips from makeup artists Steve Moore of The Moore Agency in Atlanta and Deanna Rene of Scottsdale, Ariz.
1. USE MORE THAN NORMAL
Your everyday makeup will work but it is important to use more than you normally use. A lot of makeup professionals will use airbrush makeup, which is what is used for high-definition television actors because it is waterproof and covers extremely evenly.

2. LESS CAN SOMETIMES BE BETTER
Day weddings require less makeup than evening weddings. Eye makeup can be used for dramatic effects.
3. DON’T FORGET THE CONCEALER
Concealer can be applied to the skin under the eyes to lessen the appearance of dark circles. Try to use a moisturizing concealer or blend your concealer with a little skin cream.
4. DO A TEST RUN WITH YOUR MAKEUP
To make sure the makeup you plan on using on your wedding day will be just the way you want it, do a trial run prior to the wedding. This way you can see how it will look and make any adjustments.
5. CHECK YOUR MAKEUP INGREDIENTS
Avoid titanium dioxide in your makeup. This chemical is common in sun blocks and reflects camera flashes, giving a ghostly appearance to the skin. Advanced Mineral Makeup by Annie May has been specifically formulated for photography and avoids potentially reflective ingredients.
6. USE MAKEUP WITH THE STRONGEST WATERPROOF CHARACTERISTICS
You don’t want to worry about reapplying makeup when you are trying to enjoy your reception. Make sure your foundation, eyeliner, and mascara are all waterproof. Also try to keep a tissue nearby (your maid of honor can often be of help) in order to blot your eyes during the often inevitable tears. This will help keep your makeup from smearing.
7. APPLY YOUR LIPSTICK THROUGHOUT THE DAY
Dry lips appear worse in photographs. Try to touch up your lips with lipstick throughout the day.
8.THE GROOM MIGHT NEED SOME HELP AS WELL
While a lot of grooms might be resistant, some powder can help reduce the appearance of “red-face” that commonly occurs during a day of drinking. Chapstick is also useful for keeping his lips moisturized as well.
9.GLITTER DOESN’T PHOTOGRAPH WELL
Glitter looks like little white specks when photographed and makes it look like the camera is messed up.
10.DON’T FORGET YOUR NECK AND SHOULDERS
Remember to match you head to your body by applying foundation and powder to your neck and shoulders. They should look like they belong together.
